Characteristics of a towed recreational vehicle
A towed A‑frame recreational vehicle is known in the United States as a traditional travel trailer and represents the quintessential type of towable RV. Such vehicles lack their own propulsion and must be pulled by a towing vehicle to move forward.
Towable Class B RV
A Class B motorhome, known in the United States as a fifth‑wheel trailer, boasts a substantial profile and its own set of wheels. Its side profile resembles a rectangle with the lower‑right corner truncated, while the upper‑right corner rests on the towing vehicle—typically a pickup truck—via a hitch mounted in the truck’s bed. This distinctive shape gives it a split‑level living space that many other towable RVs lack. The innovative design transforms the area above the pickup bed into a spacious master bedroom, while the interior offers ample room for family activities. Additionally, many Class B models feature panoramic glass windows at the rear. Overall, the generous sleeping quarters and versatile living areas of the Class B make it a true “motorhome” among towable RVs, rivaling traditional Class A models.
As a type of towable recreational vehicle, it can also be detached from the towing vehicle when parked at a campsite or whenever travel is not required, allowing the towing vehicle to operate independently.
Towable Class C RV
In the United States, a towable Class C motorhome is known as a dual‑ended expandable travel trailer and is more closely associated with camping. Such vehicles are often referred to as “tent trailers” in the U.S., and they are primarily designed for outdoor camping experiences. On the road, a towable Class C looks like a large, flat suitcase; only when its body is fully extended does it reveal its true form as a motorhome. Thanks to its foldable design, the interior amenities are relatively simple, focusing mainly on providing a comfortable sleeping area, along with basic cooking facilities, bathing options, and compact, foldable furniture and tables. Some towable Class C models can extend laterally at both ends, further increasing the usable space inside.
Trailer‑type Class C motorhomes are characterized by their light weight, ease of towing, and wide variety of models. Because they are relatively lightweight, most cars—even small compact vehicles—can tow them, and in some cases, these motorhomes can even be maneuvered with just human power. Their drawbacks include simple interior amenities and suitability primarily for travel during warmer seasons.
Towable Class D Motorhome
A tow-behind Class D motorhome, also known as a trailer‑mounted RV, is a type of vehicle that rides atop the bed of a pickup truck or a specially modified cargo platform. Its most distinctive feature—compared with other motorhomes—is that it has no independent wheels and relies entirely on the towing vehicle for propulsion. In appearance, a tow-behind Class D often resembles a detachable self‑propelled Class C motorhome. This design makes it particularly well suited for trips and vacations to remote campsites, scenic destinations, and other locations with challenging road conditions.Towable Class A Motorhome
