What is the mandatory scrapping age for recreational vehicles?
The scrapping age for recreational vehicles is determined on a case-by-case basis.
First of all, recreational vehicles come in many varieties, but they can broadly be divided into two main categories: self-propelled and towed. Self-propelled RVs are further classified into Type A, Type B, Type C, and Type T; towed RVs include Type A, Type B, Type C, Type D, and mobile villa‑style models. To put it simply, a self-propelled RV has its own engine and can move under its own power, whereas a towed RV is essentially just a “living space” that must be hitched to a towing vehicle, such as an off‑road SUV. These two types differ fundamentally in their automotive nature, and this difference affects the statutory service life for scrapping purposes:
1. Self-propelled recreational vehicles with a length of 6 meters or less and seating for nine passengers or fewer may be registered with a blue license plate, just like ordinary private cars. They are not subject to a mandatory scrapping deadline; however, once their cumulative mileage reaches 600,000 kilometers, the state encourages their retirement.
2. Self-propelled recreational vehicles with a length of 6 meters or more and nine or more passenger seats shall be scrapped after 15 years.
3. Towable recreational vehicles must be scrapped after 15 years; the vehicle type listed on their registration certificate is either a light‑duty or medium‑duty travel trailer.Recreational vehicle
